American chipmaker Qualcomm has partnered with Microsoft to power the widely used Windows OS with artificial intelligence (AI) enhancements.
“The innovation that is coming is on device, when you have a very powerful app to use. How do you compose an application that is built using both local compute and the cloud together to power? That is sort of what we are enabling with our Windows AI ecosystem in partnership with you (Qualcomm),” said Satya Nadella, Executive Chairman and CEO of Microsoft at the Snapdragon Summit 2023 event.
He said that applications that utilise local and hybrid AI models would shape the future of artificial intelligence.
“We have these large foundational models that are showing unbelievable capability and (Chat)GPT was a real breakthrough,” Nadella noted.
ChatGPT is the wildly successful generative AI (GenAI) chatbot developed by Microsoft-backed OpenAI, the San Francisco-based startup in which the internet major has invested billions of dollars. In January, Microsoft extended its partnership with OpenAI through a multiyear multibillion-dollar investment.
The combination of the central processing unit (CPU) and the neural processing unit (NPU), which Nadella described as a “new system architecture”, will power AI-driven Windows 11 experiences for consumers on laptops and PCs.
“The marquee experience for us is going to be Copilot. The Copilot is the start bar, and now it becomes the orchestrator of all your app experiences,” the Microsoft chief executive said.
Microsoft describes its Copilot offering as an “everyday AI companion” that incorporates the context and intelligence of the web, work data, and what a user is doing at the moment on the PC to provide better assistance with privacy and security at the forefront. It is already available in Windows 11, Microsoft 365, and Microsoft’s web browsers Edge and Bing.
Microsoft has also rolled out Copilot and AI-powered experiences to apps such as Paint, Photos, Clipchamp, and more for Windows desktops. On the other hand, Microsoft 365 Copilot will be generally available for enterprise customers starting November 1, 2023, along with Microsoft 365 Chat. Additionally, Microsoft’s new Surface devices also come with all these AI experiences.
At the event, Qualcomm launched its Snapdragon X Elite platform with a custom integrated Qualcomm Oryon mobile computing CPU which is claimed to deliver “up to 2 times faster CPU performance versus the competition, matching competitor peak performance with one-third of the power”.
The Snapdragon X Elite is capable of running generative AI models with over 13 billion parameters on-device, according to Qualcomm.
PCs powered by Snapdragon X Elite are expected to launch starting mid-2024. The chipset major has partnered with HP and Lenovo to bring the Snapdragon X Elite compute platform backed to Windows computers and laptops.
