Video streaming giants Netflix and Amazon Prime Video have already introduced cheaper subscription plans with ads. Apple is now reportedly planning to introduce a similar plan for its Apple TV+ content streaming platform. According to a report by Business Insider (seen by 9to5Mac), the Cupertino-based tech giant has made some recent hires that suggest a cheaper plan is expected to arrive soon.
Apple’s recent hirings suggest a cheaper Apple TV+ plan
The report claims that Apple has recently hired an ad executive named Joseph Cady who spent 14 years at NBCUniversal.
The report explains that Cady’s most recent title was EVP of Advanced Advertising and Partnerships. This put him in charge of data-driven and targeted TV advertising, the Business Insider report added.
As per the report, Cady also set up and oversaw NBCU’s partnerships with Amazon, Google, TikTok, and others. Earlier, he served in strategy and development roles.
Apart from Cady, Apple made a few other recent additions to its advertising team last year, the report adds. In June 2023, the company hired Jason Brum who has experience at DirecTV, NBCUniversal and more.
Apple also took in Chandler Taylor from Peacock and Jacqueline Bleazey from FanDuel in September and October 2023, respectively.
The company’s advertising business is led by Todd Teresi. Apart from the rumoured ad-support Apple TV+ tier, sports content on the platform including MLS Season Pass and Friday Night Baseball already features advertising and sponsors.
In 2022, Apple increased the price of Apple TV+ from $6.99 per month to $9.99 per month. By offering an ad-supported tier, the company may reduce the entry-level price of the platform to be more at par with Netflix.
Netflix’s ad-supported plan is not available in India. However, the “Standard with ads” is available in the US and is priced at $6.99 per month. This makes it much cheaper than the ad-free “Standard” plan which carries a price tag of $15.49 per month.
