AR Rahman’s song ‘Jai Ho,’ which became synonymous with Danny Boyle’s 2008 film Slumdog Millionaire, earned the composer two Academy Awards. However, a lesser-known chapter in the song’s journey lies within the pages of Subhash Ghai’s 2008 film Yuvvraaj.
Subhash Ghai REVEALS AR Rahman’s Oscar-winning song ‘Jai Ho’ was made for Salman Khan starrer Yuvvraaj
In a recent conversation with ANI, filmmaker Ghai revealed that ‘Jai Ho’ was originally conceived for Yuvvraaj, starring Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor, Zayed Khan, and Katrina Kaif. Rahman composed the song, and it was even recorded, but Ghai had a change of heart.
He said, “That ‘Jai Ho’ song was made for Yuvvraaj. We recorded it but after recording, I felt that it wouldn’t work for us in that situation. Rahman gave the song to that (Slumdog Millionaire) film. It is his composition.”
This wasn’t the first time Ghai displayed such artistic openness. He previously shared with The Times of India that he “happily gave the song” to Rahman for Slumdog Millionaire when it became evident it was needed for the film. “I felt the song was slightly too soft and subtle for the aggressive character (Zayed Khan),” Ghai explained.
The decision proved fruitful. ‘Jai Ho’ became a global phenomenon, winning Rahman two Oscars at the 81st Academy Awards – Best Original Song and Best Original Score.
