Karan Johar’s bond with Shah Rukh Khan is quite known. However, there are still many interesting aspects of their friendship that are still unknown. The filmmaker opened up about some of them while having a long conversation with Mayank Shekhar of Mid-Day.
“Our contracts with Shah Rukh Khan read: ‘It was a pleasure working with you. Thank you so much!’ That’s the contract. There is no contract!” – Karan Johar
To begin with, he revealed that he first saw Shah Rukh Khan when he was just 15 years old. This is when Karan was offered a role in the TV show ‘Indradhanush’ by Aanand Mahendroo of ‘Dekh Bhai Dekh’ fame. The reason KJo was considered was because the makers wanted an ‘extra plus-size’ child.
Karan Johar went to Aanand Mahendroo’s office where he had to wait for four hours. Next to him in the waiting area was a slightly older man who was sipping tea and engaged in solving a crossword. He didn’t even make eye contact with Karan.
When Aanand Mahendroo arrived, he first spoke to this gentleman, who was none other than superstar Shah Rukh Khan. SRK was offered a part in the TV show. SRK declined by saying, “No, I don’t want to do TV. I liked the tea. And stayed to finish my crossword!”
Aanand Mahendroo then met Karan Johar and informed him that he was talking to Shah Rukh Khan. He was addressed as “The actor from ‘Fauji’” by the filmmaker.
Some years later, Karan Johar met Shah Rukh Khan yet again, while working on Aditya Chopra’s Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995). SRK also featured in Karan’s debut film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998). Ever since SRK has been seen in all of Karan’s films. He wasn’t a part of Student Of The Year (2012) but was involved in the film as a producer. Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, Karan Johar’s latest directorial venture, is the first film which doesn’t feature the superstar in any capacity.
Karan was asked how much Shah Rukh charges as a lead or even when he appears in a special appearance. Karan Johar revealed that he doesn’t charge a penny. He said, “(He neither charged for) Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016) nor for Brahmastra (2022), for which he shot for 14 days! But that is our relationship.”
Karan Johar, however, treats him with clothes. KJo stated, “I give him clothes. I don’t think he has ever asked me for money, even for a film that he has done [as lead]. Whatever is given, is given. Our contracts with Shah Rukh read: ‘It was a pleasure working with you. Thank you so much!’ That’s the contract. There is no contract!”
Karan Johar, too, has always been there for Shah Rukh Khan. He narrated, “I remember when Shah Rukh was shooting for Ra.One [2011], he had a double unit. He called me to shoot the second unit for six days because [director] Anubhav Sinha was doing a big action sequence. And he needed simple patchwork kind of scenes shot. I flew from Mumbai and did it. These are not big deals.”
