After Netflix, Disney+ is coming after freeloaders, as it begins restricting users from sharing passwords, starting in Canada from November onwards.

The change was announced by the company through an email that was sent to Canadian subscribers of Disney+. “We are implementing restrictions on your ability to share your account or login credentials outside of your household,” reads the email sent to subscribers. The Help Center is now also updated, stating that “You may not share your subscription outside of your household.” FYI, Netflix charges $8 for extra users, though the option is not available in every region.

The House of Mouse’s approach seems to be similar to how Netflix is curbing password sharing. Disney defines a household as “the collection of devices associated with your primary personal residence” used by the people residing there. There will also be an option to add non-household members, similar to that of Netflix, though details are not yet available.

Bob Iger, the CEO of Disney, told shareholders during the Q3 earnings that the company would start cracking down on account sharing in 2024. However, the company is starting to take up measures a few months early, and a wider rollout could happen next year.

Disney will soon begin cracking down on password sharing, but several things remain unclear. Will Disney Plus allow profile transfers? How much will extra members have to pay? Will the new ad-supported tier also have restrictions?

In India, Disney+Hotstar, the streaming platform owned by Walt Disney’s Indian subsidiary, is also looking to limit password sharing among users. The company intends to restrict account access to a maximum of four devices, with the aim of encouraging individual subscriptions, according to a report by Reuters.

The wheels are already set in motion, however, Iger is not sure how this crackdown on password sharing would turn out for the company. Still, it is a priority, and believe there is an opportunity to grow their business by doing so.

Amazon to start ads on Prime Video from 2024

The US tech giant said the advertisements will be introduced in the United States, the UK, Germany and Canada in early 2024, followed by France, Italy, Spain, Mexico and Australia later in the year.
